The ultimate guide to buying an artificial hedge

Artificial hedging is becoming increasingly popular and walking through the streets on London round every corner there is a different outlet wooing us with their impressive display artificial hedging. With this relatively new product it is always difficult to know what you are looking for and where you should be looking for it. I have pulled together a top tip guide to suggest things to consider prior to purchasing your artificial hedge and also where to find the best products for you.

1.What is the purpose of your hedge?
There are many different reasons to purchase an artificial hedge but it is important to be clear of the purpose of the hedge before sourcing the perfect product. Here are a few of the most common artificial hedge purposes. Screening, privacy, window box, creating a border or barrier, decorative topiary, sculptures.

2. Where is your hedge going to sit?
Artificial hedges can be built in a number of different ways so before looking for the perfect artificial hedging product decide where you would like it to sit. Many customer like an artificial hedge to look as though it is growing straight out of the ground, in which case you would need an artificial hedge built on a timber frame. In places such as decking areas or patios it would not look realistic for an artificial hedge to be growing out of a hard surface such as wood or concrete and therefore you may want to consider an artificial hedge in a trough

3. Measure up!
It is really important to measure the exact space you would like you artificial hedge to sit. The more accurate the measurements the more it looks as though the artificial hedge has naturally grown into this space.

4. Pick a Foliage
The most common artificial hedging foliage is boxwood  this is a very closely cropped and has a very manicured look

Tea leaf foliage is another very popular foliage that is a little less manicured than the boxwood foliage, looking as though it was last trimmed a week or two ago and gives a fuller, bushier look to the hedge.

Privet Hedge This is a very luxurious look foliage with this luscious looking leaves leaving the hedge looking full and blossoming. The coloration of the privet is similar to the boxwood with darker greens at the base of the foliage with lighter greens at the tips, replicating the new spring growth.

Pine panel this foliage is great for covering unsightly wall spaces and often used as a base for a green wall or vertical garden. This foliage in not conducive to hedges built on timber frame.

5. Do you need foliage on all sides of you hedge?

If you hedge is going to be sitting against a wall it may not be necessary to have foliage on the back of your hedge as it will not be visible. This will save on your cost and will also help your hedge sit tight against the wall.

6.What Materials should the artificial hedge be made from?

First and foremost it is important to check to see if the foliage you buy is UV stable. Cheaper versions of artificial hedging on the market may no be UV stable and will discolor and fade when used outside. The framework of the hedge should be made from pressure treated, tanlised timber. This protects the wood from rotting when left as a permanent feature outdoors.

7. Can I build my own hedge?

Artificial hedging foliage is available in panels that clip together which enables you to build a hedge to any shape and any size. There are artificial hedging panels available to buy should you want to make a DIY hedge. In terms of instructions on how to build an artificial hedge I would recommend speaking directly to the foliage seller and ask them for a step by step guide.

8. Standard hedge vs Bespoke hedge
I would highly recommend bespoke hedges over an above a standard hedge. The more accurately an artificial hedge fits into your space the more realistic it looks. There are companies that do not charge extra for building artificial hedges to your specification  for a quick quote for this service visit the link below
